Eclipse, by Stephenie Meyer, is the third novel in the Twilight series. It is currently being filmed and will be brought to the big screen in 2010. Whilst the series was written for a teenage audience, it has managed to gain popularity around the world and amongst all age groups.
Edward Cullen is back. This places Bella in a difficult position, because her vampire boyfriend and her werewolf best friend, Jacob, are natural enemies. Both of them hold a special place in her heart, and both of them love her deeply.
In the previous novel, New Moon, Edward left Bella because he wanted her to be safe, and to be able to live a normal life. His decision left her broken, and it was Jacob who picked up the pieces. Now, Jacob must fight his natural aversion of vampires in a battle to win Bella's heart, and to keep her human.
Meanwhile, the chase is still on. Bella's enemy has evaded the vampires and the werewolves, and she's devised a plot to finally seek the revenge she wants. She's building an army. An army of new, powerful, frenzied vampires, who are pretty much unstoppable.
In doing so, she will capture the attention of the Volturi, a group of ancient vampires and enforcers of vampire law. They have not forgotten Edward's promise to turn Bella. And they have reason to not mind too much if the Cullens are brought down a peg or two.
The only way for Bella to survive, and for the small town of Forks to remain safe, is if the Cullens and werewolves can reach a truce to fight their common enemy.
Eclipse contains a lot more action than the previous two novels. When it hits the screens, it might tempt more guys to accompany their girlfriends, if they can deal with the girlfriend's fascination with Edward and Jacob.
Several plotlines come together in this third installment. Bella has to choose between Edward and Jacob. There's a showdown between her enemy and her friends. The decision needs to be made if Bella will stay mortal or become a vampire. The Volturi make a reappearance, which is significant to the fourth novel, Breaking Dawn.
Once more, Stephenie Meyer does an excellent job in keeping all her characters realistic and believable, whether they are human or supernatural beings. As you turn the pages, you'll sometimes feel frustrated at a character's actions, and at other times sympathetic. All have their flaws and their good sides, and it's easy to care about their fate.
I would recommend this novel for readers 13 and over. It contains some violence, and certain parts are quite intense so may not be suitable for younger readers.
